A new filter is likely to cost well beyond the wrong side of £1500. Having said all this I have done 12,000 miles in my 12 plate car and have not had any problems with the DPF. I cannot recall anyone on the forum having the warning light display so the auto regeneration system seems to do its stuff.

It's designed to protect the drivetrain when a problem is detected and is mostly a CRDi issue. It can be triggered by an auto trans fault too I think.
