Rank insignia plaques, also referred to as rank pins, were badges used in the military forces of Sheev Palpatine's Galactic Empire as a means to indicate and distinguish officer ranks. They were originally used by Republic officers during the Clone Wars, when Palpatine was still Chancellor of the Galactic Republic.

The insignia has never gone away either and has appeared in every Star Wars content where Imperials are present. Ever notice the little squares on an Imperial uniform? Those are called Imperial Rank Insignia, and each one has a different meaning, to signify the role and ranking of various Imperials.
